| Toluene
or Methylbenzene is also a pure aromatic hydrocarbon compound with a fixed boiling
point. It is a colourless and flammable liquid having characteristic aromatic
odour. Toluene is virtually immiscible in water. It is primarily used in the manufacture
of chemicals, drugs, explosives, food flavouring and sweetening agents, paints,
thinners and resins. It is used for the manufacture of benzyl chloride. Benzyl
chloride is used as raw material to manufacture butyl benzyl phthalate and benzyl
alcohol, which is again converted to aliphatic esters. Aliphatic esters are used
in soaps, perfumes and flavours. Benzyl salicylate is used as a sunscreen in lotions
and cosmetic creams. It conforms to IS:534-1967 specification for pure nitration
grade. Benzene content of toluene is normally kept below 50 ppm to ensure that
no impurities are generated during further processing at the customers end. |
