Petroleum Explosive Rule

Naphtha is a general term used to describe special boiling point spirits having a boiling range of approximately 30OC to 170OC. Main applications of naphtha are:
  1. feed stock in fertilizer industry
  2. feed stock in petrochemicals
  3. fuel in gas turbines
  4. fuel in certain reformer furnace
Naphtha General or High Aromatic Naphtha (HAN)

This Naphtha of high aromatic content is generally used as a fertiliser feed stock and also as a fuel in fertiliser plants, gas turbines and various other applications. In a fertilizer plant, the requirements are basically for hydrogen generation for ammonia production. Each plant prescribes a ratio of C/H as well as a cap on aromatics and olefins.

Naphtha Petrochemical or Low Aromatic Naphtha (LAN)

This type of Naphtha has low aromatic content and is used for the manufacture of various types of petrochemicals and fertilisers.

Naphtha as High Aromatic or Low Aromatic has no specific classification. Each refinery has its own specification for Naphtha it produces. But by and large the HAN has higher aromatic content and less paraffinic content while LAN has lower aromatic content and higher paraffinic content. Higher paraffinic content is useful when it is used in reformer for generating Hydrogen.
